|Late one Friday evening the only Fenner Authorised gearbox repair workshop - ERIKS Electromechanical based in Dudley - received a delivery of two Fenner Shaft Mounted Speed Reducers which were required back on site for an urgent breakdown on a stone conveyor drive. |
Upon receipt the units were dismantled to ascertain their refurbishment requirements. One drive was revealed to have general wear and tear and the other to have severe internal wear, both its first and second stage pinions required replacing and the mating wheels turned through 180º, allowing the crown wheels to run on their good toothed faces. In addition one output drive coupling was found to be severely worn. Both units were deemed viable repair options.
A new coupling was selected and offered to the customer, and upon acceptance the coupling was taxied from Couplings and Drives based in Doncaster (part of the ERIKS group) to Dudley to be bored and keyed in the machine shop. The SMSR units were worked upon all day Saturday and until completition early Sunday afternoon.
The units were despatched direct to the customer to arrive early evening as agreed. The local ERIKS Electromechanical workshop re-installed both units on-site in time to enable the customer to start up his plant on Monday morning.
The combined efforts of three Fenner Authorised Distributors ensured that these large units were turned around quickly allowing the customer minimal downtime.
